Why Was My Reddit Account Suspended?

Reddit uses two distinct types of account suspensions, and understanding the difference is important. Site-wide suspension (by Reddit admins). A site-wide suspension is applied by Reddit's Trust & Safety team and prevents you from using your account anywhere on Reddit. You cannot post, comment, vote, send messages, or access any subreddit while site-wide suspended. Subreddit ban (by subreddit moderators). A subreddit ban is applied by the moderators of a specific community and only prevents you from participating in that particular subreddit. You can still use the rest of Reddit normally. Subreddit bans do not affect your account globally. These two types of bans have different causes, different appeal processes, and different durations. The rest of this article focuses primarily on site-wide suspensions, as they are the more severe of the two.

Reddit's Trust & Safety team applies site-wide suspensions for violations of the Reddit Content Policy. The most common reasons include the following. Harassment and threatening behaviour. Sending threatening messages, stalking other users across subreddits, or coordinating harassment campaigns is one of the most frequent causes of site-wide suspension. Spam. Creating multiple accounts to flood subreddits with promotional content, links, or repetitive posts is treated seriously by Reddit's systems and administrators. Vote manipulation. Using multiple accounts, bots, or external coordination to artificially inflate or deflate votes on posts or comments is a significant violation. For more on this, see our article on whether Reddit bans for vote manipulation. Posting prohibited content. Sharing content that violates Reddit's content rules — including non-consensual intimate imagery, content sexualising minors, or content glorifying violence against specific individuals — results in immediate suspension. Impersonation. Claiming to be another real person, including celebrities, public figures, or Reddit staff, in a deceptive way violates Reddit's rules. Evading a prior ban. Creating a new account to circumvent an existing suspension is itself a violation and results in the new account also being suspended. Sharing personal information (doxxing). Posting someone else's personal identifying information without consent is a serious violation that typically results in immediate suspension.

Reddit identifies violations through a combination of automated systems and human review. Automated detection systems. Reddit's systems continuously monitor for spam patterns, vote manipulation signals, and prohibited content. Accounts exhibiting these patterns are flagged automatically. User reports. Other Reddit users can report posts, comments, and accounts that appear to violate the Content Policy. Reports are reviewed by subreddit moderators and, for serious cases, escalated to Reddit administrators. Subreddit moderator reports. Subreddit moderators can escalate accounts to Reddit's admin team for behaviour that violates site-wide rules beyond their local moderation authority.

Reddit notifies suspended accounts through the following channels. Email notification. Reddit sends an email to the address associated with your account explaining that it has been suspended and the general reason for the action. Reddit inbox message. In some cases, Reddit's Trust & Safety team sends a message to your Reddit inbox explaining the suspension. If you can still log in, check your inbox. Login screen message. If your account is fully suspended, attempting to log in may display a message indicating the account has been suspended, with a reference to Reddit's Content Policy. For information on how long Reddit suspensions last, see our article on how long Reddit suspensions last.

If you believe your Reddit account was suspended in error, you can submit an appeal. For site-wide suspensions: Contact Reddit's support team through the official Help Centre at support.reddithelp.com. Submit a request explaining that you wish to appeal the suspension, provide your username, and clearly state why you believe the suspension was incorrectly applied. For subreddit bans: Message the moderation team of the subreddit that banned you. You can do this via the modmail system by sending a message to r/[subredditname] through the moderator message option. Keep your message respectful and focused on your specific case. Keep your appeal factual and calm. Emotional or accusatory messages are less likely to result in a positive outcome. Focus on specific facts and why the suspension was incorrectly applied.

Following these practices significantly reduces the risk of your Reddit account being suspended. Read subreddit rules before posting. Each subreddit has its own rules in addition to Reddit's platform-wide Content Policy. Violating subreddit-specific rules frequently leads to bans that can escalate to admin review. Never use multiple accounts to vote or post. Operating multiple accounts to influence votes or post from multiple identities is one of the most common causes of site-wide suspension. Keep interactions respectful. Harassment, threats, and targeted abuse are among the top reasons for site-wide suspension. Keeping all interactions civil and respectful is essential. Never post personal information about others. Sharing identifying information about other users, even in public subreddits, is a serious policy violation.

Reddit suspends accounts for violations of its Content Policy, including harassment, spam, vote manipulation, prohibited content, and ban evasion. Suspensions can be temporary or permanent and may be site-wide or limited to specific subreddits. If your account has been suspended and you believe it was in error, you can appeal through Reddit's official support channels. Adhering to Reddit's Content Policy and each subreddit's individual rules is the most effective way to maintain a healthy, active account.
